Babytime is Tuesdays at 9:30am in the Storytime Room.

In January we emphasized Colors. While learning the colors will be an ongoing process for many years, using as lots of descriptive words while talking to your baby helps improve their vocabulary. As you get in the habit of pointing out objects and describing them,

When your baby begins to say
a few words, repeat what she says and add to it. For example, if your baby says “dog,” respond
with “Yes, that is a really big, brown dog.”

Books read this month:
Brown Bear Brown Bear what do you see? by Bill Martin
Go!Go! Bobo: Colors by Simon Basher
Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh
Flappy waggy wiggly by Amanda Leslie (Storyhour Book)

Favorite Song: Baa Baa Black/White Sheep

What (usually) Happens in Babytime:
Start with our Welcome Song: The More We Get Together
Sing a nursery rhyme or other songs
Read a book
Do movement songs or action rhymes
Read a book or pass out a board book to each family. This time allows
the parent to read with their child on their lap and create a safe and
familiar space for the baby to explore a book such as holding it and
turning pages.
Pass out scarves to play peek a boo
Repeat our welcome song
Bring out the bin of toys to play.

Panels containing tips on how to preserve heirlooms such
as textiles, family videos, jewelry, clocks and watches, photographs,
paintings and paper items such as books, letters, certificates and
maps are on display. The exhibit, designed by collections care professionals, offers
helpful hints on the proper display, storage and handling of items, as
well as expert advice on things not to do. It will be available for
viewing during library business hours.

On Saturday, Jan. 4, at 1-3 p.m., DeLano and library volunteer Theo
Yoast will present a class designed to help beginners learn how to start
researching their family genealogy. The first part of the session will
introduce participants to the resources available in the library,
throughout town and on the web. The second part will introduce the
library’s online genealogy databases, Heritage Quest and Ancestry.com.

On Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m., Aimee Bryant, director of the Sheerar
Museum of Stillwater History, and Registrar Ashlie J. Hight will
present “Family Heirloom Preservation.” The presentation will go into
more depth on caring for the types of items displayed in the exhibit.

In December we emphasized clothing and body parts.
Songs that use body parts develop both gross motor skills and
body self-awareness. We have a variety of songs and rhymes to point out body parts. You can use more then just your hands or fingers to identity those body parts for example we use scarves. Using a variety of items provides a new and engaging experience and makes old songs new and fun! All learning
is best when it’s playful and fun.

Favorite Song: Wake up toes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrWNq3WGKzE

What (usually) Happens in Babytime:
Start with our Welcome Song: The More We Get Together
Sing a nursery rhyme or other songs
Read a book
Do movement songs or action rhymes
Read a book or pass out a board book to each family. This time allows
the parent to read with their child on their lap and create a safe and
familiar space for the baby to explore a book such as holding it and
turning pages.
Pass out scarves to play peek a boo
Repeat our welcome song
Bring out the bin of toys to play.

The response was overwhelming and we had to add a third session. We then received a wonderful donation from Elite Repeat which greatly increased our blocks.

Lego Club is held in the Storytime room on the 1st & 2nd Wednesday and 3rd Thursday of each month from 3:30-4:30. We have a capacity of 20 kids. Children grades K-5th grade can sign up for a session at the Children's Desk or call 405-372-3633 x8108 or email childrensreference@stillwater.org
Early Literacy Tip
We did stories and songs about body
parts like hands, feet, eyes and ears plus the clothing that goes on those body parts. It’s great for children to learn
the words of their body parts. You might even want to expand on what we
do today by teaching your child words like spine, scalp, shins and
ankles. The more words your child learns now the better prepared he or
she will be for kindergarten. Start a new holiday tradition at Stillwater Public Library's Family Film Night

Start your holiday festivities with a big screen trip to the North
Pole! The Stillwater Public Library is holding its second “Holiday
Family Film Night” on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m. Participants will
take an adventure on a magical holiday train headed to Santa’s home.

“Last year we had an amazing crowd at our evening holiday cinema,”
said Elizabeth Murray, children’s librarian. “We hope that families
will attend together each year and make it part of their new holiday
traditions. This year though, we want to encourage parents to bring
their little ones early so they can also register for a library card.
It will be a fun early holiday gift!”

Library cards are free to anyone, of any age who lives, works or goes
to school in Payne County. Children need to be accompanied by a parent
or legal guardian who will need to show a photo ID and proof of Payne
County residency. Cards may be mailed to the home address in lieu of
documents that show residency.

“Holiday Family Film Night” is free of charge and open to all ages.
It features popcorn and a PG rated movie shown on the library
auditorium’s giant screen. Children are invited to wear their pajamas,
with shoes, and to bring a pillow or stuffed animal to the movie.
Please bring a water bottle with a closeable lid.

For more information about the movie, please call 405-372-3633 x108 or e-mail askalibrarian@stillwater.org. Visit the library online at http://library.stillwater.org.
Early Literacy Tip
Not all books you share have to be stories.... when you look at the pictures in a non-fiction book or read a wordless book your child is building background knowledge about the world. This will help them make sense out what they read later on. You can also extend the story and ask the child to narrate when you have books that have limited words such as No. Reading with your children will help them get ready to read! (Practice: Reading)

Beautiful wordless books to checkout:
The Lion & the mouse by Jerry Pinkney
Thunderstorm by Arthur Geisert
A ball for Daisy by Christopher Raschka
Flotsam by David Wiesner
